Black box car insurance

We can help make car insurance more affordable for 17 to 25 year olds.

Your child getting their first car is an exciting time for both of you, as hopefully you’ll no longer need to be the family taxi service! However, there are two concerns when they go on the road on their own for the first time:

  • Will they be safe?
  • How can we afford the insurance?

How can the Family Building Society help?

We realise that getting affordable cover for young people is a challenge, so have partnered with ingenie who have an innovative policy.

ingenie provides black box car insurance, helping young drivers get discounts on their car insurance based on how well they drive.

Safety is so important. That’s why ingenie rewards safe drivers with cheaper insurance. They fit a small black box in the car (or send a self-fit box depending on the type of car) and update the driver with regular driving feedback and a score out of 100 based on their speed, acceleration, braking and cornering.

The driver receives feedback every 10 days or so and has their premium reviewed three times a year, keeping them engaged with how well they’re driving.

The higher the score, the bigger the discount – up to an extra 21% during their first year*.

Useful information about ingenie and how it works

After just one year with ingenie, drivers more than halve their risk of crashing - which is huge considering that most new driver crashes happen in the early stages of getting a licence.

7/10 ingenie drivers also earn a discount off their insurance price*.

Three times a year, the driver's policy is reviewed and a discount is applied if they're driving well.

*Premium increase could apply for poor driving

After a year with ingenie, on average, the cost of drivers' insurance comes down by around 35% – that's an average of £500 cheaper**. The driver will also build up their own no claims discount which is valuable when getting car insurance in future.

**Based on ingenie renewals at end of first year, July 19-June 2020

An ingenie engineer will come out in the first two weeks to install the black box out of sight in the car, or you'll be sent a self-fit box in the post. Don't worry – the driver will still be insured from day one.
They focus on how their customer drives, not when they drive - so there's no night-time curfew.
Drivers can download ingenie’s app or go online and receive feedback on how they're driving.
If the car is stolen, they can work directly with the police to locate it – most stolen cars have been located within two hours.

Many young drivers have a crash within the early stages of passing their test, which is why car insurance can be expensive for this age group. However, with ingenie, when a parent is involved and able to access their child's driving feedback, it lowers the risk of them crashing by 10%.

By helping young drivers stay safe on the road, ingenie can reward them with discounts on their insurance. With regular feedback, useful advice and rewards for being safe, any driver can be a good driver.
